In the final months of his life, Henry David Thoreau reworked earlier lecture notes and journal entries into his essay "Walking", which was first published by Ticknor & Fields in the June 1862 issue of the Atlantic Monthly, a month after the author´s death. Presented by publisher James T. Fields as a dedication gift to the Concord Free Public Library in 1873, the manuscript forms part of the library´s William Munroe Special Collections - the major archive of Concord and home of the largest collection in New England of primary Thoreau material
